Default how to adjust clutch cable?

I just bought a set of 14" apes for my 06 road king and am having a hard time figuring out how to get enough slack in the clutch cable to attach to the hand lever. There's no cable slack even after making adjustments under the rubber boot. Someone told me I'd have to open the derby cover and adjust the clutch pack, is that the way or am I doing something wrong?

The clutch cable really needs to be long enough (before you get into adjusting anything) to comfortably reach on both ends. If it came down to a matter of adjustment there's no way you'd get full side to side throw on the handlebars. It sounds like you need a longer clutch cable.

Default Longer cable

I just did the same thing on FLHTCU and the cable wasn't long enough. So I bought a longer cable and installed it in no time flat and that fixed the problem for me.

Mike, are you sure you have the correct length cable for this application? You shouldn't have to adjust the clutch for cable fitment, the threaded cable adjustment should be enough to get it on and get good lever feel

The guys at Hill Country Cycle are telling me I have to open the derby to adjust the clutch pack, that just doesnt sound right I agree. Is there any way I could have screwed up when I attached the cable under the cover, I dont see how though.

Did you get a new longer cable or are you trying to install the original one?

I have to agree with NickD, if you have to force the cable on, you wont get full side to side throw. You still need a little more length (the story of my life!)

The cable reaches the clutch lever fine but there's NO slack, ie only about 1/2" of exposed cable between the outer jacket and the attachment ring, so there's not way to get the lever into the housing without more slack.

What length clutch cable did you buy? It sounds like its to short for the new apes.
