Why be a dealer? Its the best oil out there for harleys and you can buy it here direct http://www.amsoil.com/ and it costs 9.00 a qt. same as syn 3 at the harley dealer and it arrives at your door in two days. Or just buy mobil1 for big twins at auto zones for 7.99, it and amsol rate almost the same. here is what you need if you want amsoil.

I live on one of the scenic routes to Lynchburg, TN. With all of the bikes that pass by on weekends I figured I might sell enough to keep myself in free oil.

I run 20W50 Royal Purple in all three holes. Amsoil says that 20W50 is the same viscosity as 75W90 gear lube. Not the same weight, but the same viscosity. I still say if HD recommends that their Syn3 can be run safely in all three holes, why not run it? I assume they know more about it than me.

Any of the above are better than motor oil in the trans. I use Redline Shockproof Heavy. Check out all of the oil and lubricant threads in the forum tech section. Lots of good info, test results, and testamonials by those that have tried them all.

 

I changed from Syn3 to Redline Heavy Shockproof just before making the 2400 mile round trip to Deals Gap a couple of weeks ago. There was a slight whine in 2nd and 3rd and it took care of it. The big thing is changing the engine oil to Amsoil 20v50 from that SYN3 stuff when I got back. I cannot believe how quiet the motor is with the Amsoil. I should have done it a long time ago... Really unbelievable..

 

Amsoil's pyramid marketing strategy works similar to Amway, and my argument with their techniques mostly revolves around questionable marketing claims. About 10 years ago I researched some of them and found errors and misrepresentation in some of their test results. 'Tis a pity, as their oil is above average, though overpriced (IMO) and difficult to find on the road. I use Royal Purple 75w90 MaxGear and the tranny shows no signs of wear after 11 years and 105k miles. My distributor and a guru at RP told me there was no need to use the higher-vis 85-140 gear oil, so I've stayed with the thinner viscosity. A friend is a self-employed crane mechanic and has told me that switching to RP gear oil in crane mechanisms has doubled part life. It is available from Pep Boys and Napa, but if you want accessibility go with Mobil1. It is also an excellent product and is available nearly everywhere.

Frankly, I think any quality hypoid gear oil, synthetic or otherwise, will work fine in the HD tranny.

 

So if you guys all run gear oil in the tranny, do you run whatever 20W50 you use in the primary? I'm thinking of going with Mobil1 20w50 in the engine and primary and Mobil1 75w90 in the tranny but I have a while before I do it so other opinions may sway me to something else.

Just doing a litle research on Redline Shockproof Heavy for my '07 6 speed. You indicated in a previous post you had used this product. Still using it? Continue to have good luck with it in that '07 6 speed?
