Gas Mileage after (Stage 1/2) upgrade?
#11
If you're consistently running the speeds your signature picture shows, you're lucky to be getting in the mid 30's!
To the OP, I've read posts on this subject many times through the years and they run the gambit from "mileage dropped way down but bike runs like s scalded ape so I don't care" to "mileage actually went up after the Stage ?? upgrade." I've got FuelMoto's Stage 1 on my Ultra right now. That's SEAC, Jackpot's w/silent baffle, and PCV programmed with FuelMoto's standard setups for my bike. I got a noticeable improvement in performance, nothing earth shattering by any stretch, but just enough that I can feel it in the seat of the pants so I'm happy. It didn't effect my fuel economy one way or the other as far as I've been able to tell. I don't hot rod the bike but I don't particularly baby it either. I just ride.
I don't think I'd worry about mileage changes to much with a Stage 1 or 2 mod. "You" are still going to be the biggest factor in what kind of fuel economy you'll get!
Ride Safe,
Steve R.

And to the original question, when I did the stage 1 mods I didn't notice any significant change in fuel mileage.

Screaming Eagle Stg1 A/C w/K&N element, Jackpot 2-1-2 Header w/stock mufflers, PCV w/AutoTune.
A/F ratios 13.8 in cruise range. May still go a little richer as summer gets here because it still pings a little when hot. I don't have any ping issues now with the temps in the 50s - 60s. Also going to play with the timing when it gets warmer.

Nothing is off the table at this point. I'm just waiting for summer and warmer temperatures to do the final dialing-in. Like I said in a previous post, the bike runs perfectly now with the temps in the 50s and 60s and I probably could get away with leaning it just a bit if the temps were always this moderate. But when it gets warmer the pinging becomes an issue so I want to do the final A/F ratios and timing settings at that time. Average summer temps around here are in the mid-90s.

I have been riding for years and never had a chance to check this from the start. I bought my new '09 Road Glide and I wanted to know exactly what kind of mileage I would get when I improved my motor. I asked the dealer if this would improve my mileage. The dealer told me I should see an improvement in both performance and mileage. But most riders don't see the increase in mileage. This is because when they find the improved performance, they ride harder and this decreases the mileage.
So I mapped a route from work and back with my stock '09 Road Glide. About 43 miles, one way. I first drove the distance going 70 MPH. I got around 36 MPG.
I added a Arlen Ness Stage 1 Air cleaner, only. Mileage went to 38 MPG over two months.
I had the Stage 1 re-map installed with stock mufflers. Mileage improved to around 39-40. I added a set of New Harley Screaming Eagle Touring Mufflers (65976-96) and My mileage is now 44 MPG.
I noticed an improvement in performance. It is nice to have the power and sometimes hard not to use it.
When I rode across country on vacation in August 2009, I had the stock set up. I got the 28 to 39 MPG driving 80 MPH the entire trip. The last year trip, August 2010, I had the Arlen Ness Air cleaner installed. I got 40 -41 MPG over the entire trip. Again going average 80 MPH.
I will see how it goes this year when I trip back east again with the complete Stage 1 Kit installed.

PCV, SEAC, and Jackpot Dynotuned. I went from 43 stock to 36 stage 1. These numbers are from averages so they aren't far off from what you would expect from normal everyday riding with both solo and 2 up. I'm going to add the mpg map and a switch to help out on trips. Although my milage took a hit, the bike runs better and is stronger.
