My new exhaust is coming next week. do i need a special tool for the O2 sensors? I built the bike from ground up so skills is not an issue. I just don't want to damage the sensors.

They do make a special O2 sensor socket, but you shouldn't really need it.
I've removed them without using that socket before.
Just have to be careful and not damage the connector.

 

No special tool needed. As RollaMo suggested, careful with the wiring/connector. Once i break them loose, I hold the wires and rotate with each wrench turn so as to not bind the sensitive leads up.

 

No special tool needed (even though they sell one - marketing)...as RollaMo said just have to be careful and (not) damage the connector and (sensor)..I also strongly recommend using "anti-seize" when you install them on your new pipes.

 

Use a box end or open end wrench to remove the sensors. This way you wont come near the connector.

 

What I did, cut the zip ties and I unplugged the connectors, then removed my header. Once I have the header on the ground, alot easier to remove the 02 sensors and you can either use an open or closed end wrench (i think it was 7/8" on my 09). I then installed the 02 sensors on the new header with it still off the bike and did use some anti-seize on the threads.

My 09 manual says 30-44 ft lbs on the sensors.

...or cut a slot into your socket for the wires. they sell them cheap, but I usually pick up single craftsman or snap on sockets cheap at the pawn shop and alter to my needs.

 

Or...put a tuner on that bad boy & don't worry about O2 sensors - tie-wrap them away & plug the bungs.

 

I agree with Grillfish. It is so much easier to just disconnect the wires from under the seat. They are quick disconnects. It is so much better and safer to take them out while the headers are laying on the table or floor. That way, you don't stand a chance of stripping the wires. Then you'd be screwed in an unpleasant way. Those things aren't cheap.
