Default Cigarette lighter vs 12 volt power point

Can somebody tell me what the difference really is, if there is one?

Lately the stuff I'm running off my cigarette lighter has started to cut out on me (intermittently or just turns off completely). This is happening with my heated gear as well as my little rechargable flashlight I keep plugged in there most of the time.
I'm wondering if I replace the cigarette lighter with the 12 volt power point, if that would fix the problem.

Anybody have any insight or experience with this? All input is appreciated...even the smartass answers are good for entertainment value.

Not sure what 12V powerpoint you mean, but I will say that the standard cig lighter socket is a less than desirable design mechanically and intermittent elec dropouts over time, especially on a bike that is shaking about, must be expected. 15 years ago no one even thought of plugging something in these sockets, so I am surprised the automotive industry hasn't come up with a more appropriate alternative standard - although this is probably down to the fact that the global manufacturers can't agree on a spec for anything, no matter how trivial.

I'm talking about the "supplimental 12v power point". H-D part # 91843-97. It should be a direct replacement for the cig lighter... I think.

I replaced the cigarette lighter socket with a Powerlet socket which is a much better plug in connection for accessories.

it's a crap interface- but the standard more or less.

try cleaning out you lighter hole, see if there is corrosion in there

check all your plugs, many have a screw on end ( for a fuse, or just for assembly) which can get loose.

They're one in the same. Only difference is everyone trying to be PC.
Cigarettes = BAD Power Point = GOOD.
To me it will always be called a cigarette lighter. to you youngsters it'll always be called Power Point.
I use to plug in a spot light and a CB to it....never had any power drops or any problems after I giggled it around a bit to make a good connection.

Same thing with "Recording" a song, now it's called "Burning" a song. LOL

Things change and not for the better mostly.
Remember station wagons? Now they're called cross over vehicles.
