I learned how to ride on a 1978 Honda XR80 dirt bike, that we still have. I last rode it about two years ago, and my fatass sure taxed that tough little bike, but I rode it.

Self taught.... at 38 years old. Buddy of mine bought a bike and I said I was interested in a bike but I wanted to learn how first and get my license, etc before I bought a bike. He told me that I would never get a bike if I waited to "learn" first.

He was correct... I found an old 85 Honda Magna and it sat in my garage for a couple of weeks and I couldn't stand it anymore, so I hopped on it, started it up and just went thru the motions while sitting on it.

First thing I did was just put it in gear. Then I eased the clutch and rolled to the end of the drive way, backed the bike back up and did it again.... and again... and again.

I finally got enough nerve to not stop at the end of the drive way and eased out into the street (lived out in the country) and took her for a spin getting up to third gear.

After a couple of weeks of just putting around I got my learners permit and took the motorcycle safety course.

On a side note, here is a good tip if you are selling a bike to a tire kicker. When I sold my last bike, I could tell the guy looking was just a tire kicker. He said he was interested but wanted to learn how to ride and take the safety course. I told him he will never do it unless there is a bike in the garage for incentive. He bought it that day.

That was one of the first bikes I rode and about the same age!

I think the first thing I rode was a Tote-Goat.
