Garmin Streetpilot 2720
I've been looking at GPS units for the scoot for a little while now. I've seen several Zumo 550's on eBay, but they mostly seem to go for something north of $400. I've also run across Streetpilot 2720's, which I found are a discontinued model, but are waterproof, and regularly go for under $100, plus about $50-60 for hardwiring and motorcycle mount. Anyone have experience with these units? Was wondering about their vibration resistance, ability to upload current maps, etc. I am only looking for something to give me directions, find food, shelter, etc, and withstand rainstorms. Thanks for any input!

Yep, I have one sitting right in front of me. I bought it refurbished about a year and a half ago to replace a Garmin 2610 that I had been using for several years. If you don't need all the fancy bells and whistles like bluetooth and MP3 playback it is a very solid unit. The downsides are a slightly smaller screen than the Zumo 550, it has no battery, so only works when plugged into a 12V source, and the speaker is integral with the power cord. I wired mine to a Powerlet plug and have a Powerlet socket mounted in my fairing. You can update the maps just as you can with any other Garmin unit and it will provide the same routing that you would get with the Zumo.
So, I think that for $100 you won't be disappointed at all.

I have a 2720 also. I had one on my 2001 Vulcan Meanstreak that I traded for my 2011 RK.
I use a RAM mount and it is rock solid. Since I don't regulary use the voice prompts and what not, I went cheap and attached a female 12v cigar lighter plug under the seat and ran the wire down the tank under the speedo.
I like the ability to configure the screen depending on if you are following a route or not. I also like the ability of being able upload routes or even to take the "breadcrumb trail" and upload that to a computer and make a route out of it and send it back to the unit. The 2720 has many many options that are just not available on the newer Nuvi units. I can't speak for the Zumo.
It holds up well to vibration. Not to bad in the rain either. I did notice, much like Moe55, that there was clouding on the center of the screen. not to bad and very small and really dosent effect the operation or the veiwability. Could also be because I took it apart to change the screen. The touch part just up and stopped working one day. Bought a broken unit off ebay and swapped screens.
For the price of used units I don't see how you could go wrong.
