Default Spoke to Mr. Bob Wood about cams....

He wanted info about me and what I ride......I have a stage 1 RG, I'm 240lbs and ride a lot of 2 up, trips thru passes.... I like riding in the 2000-4000rpm range but don't want it to fall flat if I'm passing a truck and wringing it out to redline.... I was kinda set on the 555 and was thinking about going with a 030 HG. Bob said that would be a good combo but if I didn't want to deal with putting on the HG he reccomended the 5-6 as the ultimate 2-up touring torque cam or the 7H for a little more top end but still designed for heavy touring bikes requiring big bottom end.

As I'm going to do the work myself I like the idea of not having to go with the headgasket replacement to get what I want and am leaning towards the 7H.

Thoughts?

Regardless of cam choice, an .030 squish is beneficial to minimizing ping.
Not a cure-all, but an optimal range in that regard.

You are already pulling the front end up. Looks like you are set!

I've spoke with Mr. Woods before about my evo and putting in a TW6 and it was the same thing, gotta go with a .030 Head Gasket to increase Compression.

Now it's the same thing with the Tw6-6's. Gotta put in a .030 Head Gasket to improve Compression in order for the 6's to be most efficient.
I have the 6's (not installed yet) for my new bike but would like a cam that I did not have "bump up" the compression.

I'm sure Mr. Woods has forgotten more than I will ever know about cams, but I wonder how come he cannot make a cam to where you wouldn't have to "bump up" the compression w/a .030 Head Gasket to get the benefit from his cams, one that would be "good to go" right out of the box?

sounds like the 5-6 and the 7H qualify as not needing comp bump to work well according to what bob said to me....

The 5-6 is good to go without a .030 hg.

We have installed hundreds of Woods cams, most of them have been TW6-6, TW-555 and TW-7H. These are all really variations of the TW6 cam. While most combinations will respond well to an increase in compression we have seen excellent results with stock compression many times over, it is not a necessity to install the .030 gaskets. For example all of the testing and charts we posted with these cams on stock motors has been with stock compression, you do not need to increase the compression to see very good results.

Bob Wood definitely knows "a few things" about cams and motors (and actually just about anything really, which just amazes me) and I really feel honored being able to work closely with him. We have yet to see a cam in a stock 96" match the TW-555 from 2750-4500 RPM, we will be putting these cams in our 2011 103" bike for some testing in the next few weeks as well, i'm expecting some pretty awesome numbers.
