What would one have to do to the Heads? Port and polish, or?
Would not those cams work without doing anything to the Heads?
Just curious...
Are there any cams besides stock that work with unmodified heads?

I'm only gonna make a minimal generalization here, and let somebody else elaborate better.

Most cams will work with unmodified heads,..... but modifying the heads usually adds anywhere from 5hp and up to the current cams capabilities. Worth doing, but some have to wait and add the headwork later. But it's still fun when you do it, even if it's later.

Yeah I am aware of that Ed. They will breathe better for one thing, but then again if you are going to that trouble to modify your heads you might as well go with the 107 kits that are available wouldn't you think?

I really don't want to go that route just yet as I feel that the 96 by itself is a fine motor. I just thought that cams might suffice.., or one would think anyway..

The 96" will benefit just fine and dandy from headwork!!!!!

However, I do see your other point. With heads off, there are NO MORE BOLTS between you and the bigger jugs. HUGE temptation for added displacement. Displacement is torque. Torque is fun!

But you can do that later. No biggy. (even though I couldn't resist the temptation myself). LOL You will benefit from headwork on your 96" and don't screw yourself by thinking otherwise.

Even if you don't do headwork, at least shave them down to get a compression that blends with your cam choice.

Why change a cam, and willingly accept 75% of the power it offers?
Not like they will charge you 75% of the price for it.
"I'm not doing my heads, so please don't charge me full price of the cam".

Just do it! Go ahead and stay with 96", choose a cam with a profile that suits your riding style, shave your heads to suit the cam and throw in the 030 gaskets.
You will not regret the extra effort!

Shaving your heads for compression is not expensive. Way cheaper than porting them. $50 bucks maybe?

Nothing wrong with a cam swap in a 96. The 06+ heads flow very well in stock condition, and the right cam will get you to nearly 90 hp and 100 ft lbs of tq, give or take a little. If you start chasing the next thing, that's when you find yourself at 107 with stage III heads and another 1500 bucks missing from your checkbook. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There's so many more cams to choose from when you're at 10:1 static compression than when you're at 9.2. However, if you're cash strapped, you can still swap in a cam like the HQ500 or SE204,and make gains across the entire rpm band. And SE255 take outs can be found for next to nothing on ebay, and work well in the 96 inch touring motors.

Had to double take on what you were asking. The Rockers in his sig line are the model of J&M speakers. Not rocker arms.
