Default Fairing removal necessary to change headlight bulb?

2006 Ultra. I always figured that if I ever needed to change the headlight bulb that I would just have to remove the trim ring, unscrew the headlamp reflector gizmo and remove the bulb from the rear of the reflector housing.

However, an acquaintance with a 2007 UC told me he had to remove the entire outer fairing to replace his bulb. This truly sounds like a ridiculous design if that is indeed true. So, should I ever need/want to replace my bulb, how do I do this?

Thank you.

Your friend is correct you'll need to remove the fairing to get to the bulb. Now removing the fairing is pretty straight forward. Remove the seven screws (three holding the windshield) and two on each side of the inner fairing and finally the two located at the bottom where the fairing attaches to the triple tree. I can have mine off and back on in 20 minutes.

Not that bad...

I have an 09. All I do is remove the chrome trim ring and remove the 3 screws that hold the headlight. Then pull the headlight out and unplug the electrical cable, pull the bulb and replace with new one.

I don't know about the 06. I would think it would be the same.

I think I read that you may have to remove the fairing on a Road Glide--I'm not sure.

Although this is the easiest, to me...it can be changed by pulling the headlight bucket from the front, too.

I have removed my fairing before to add J&M speakers and you are correct that there is nothing to it. However, my UC setup looks just like smithbrl's '09 and he does it the way I thought I would. Perhaps a few more replies will tell the whole story.

Thanks all.

What he said. The first thing I would suggest is buy a service manual. Well worth the $s. It will pay for itself several times over.

Unless you want to practice(?) removing the outer fairing, no need to remove it. Just my
