Sticky strings work great and I have never experienced or heard of a failure with them. I have heard of mushroom plugs failing though....

What can I do on the side of the road with a flat now...? Glad I purchased the flat tire roadside service/warranty. Do I have any other choices?
Yes, Ride-On tire sealant. Works best in tubeless but they claim it works also in tube tires, just not as well.

I have had bikes with spokes and luckily I never got a flat. I would never get a touring bike with spokes because I don't want to be in the middle of no-where and have a flat.

Also +6 on the Stop-n-Go plug kit. I also have their small pump and I carry CO2 cartridges.

www.patchboy.com
I use their mushroom plugs and self vulcanizing plugs. Both work great.
Carry these all the time cause both my cars have run flats. The mushrooms work great.

I use punctureseal (www.punctureseal.com), same principle as 'ride-on' , its been tested up to 150mph so no worries about keeping speed down, unlike some other products. I also have a SnG kit I carry 'just in case' !

20 or 30 years ago my first Stop & Go kit came with both plugs & patches. I patched a couple of tubes for others on the road, but back then I was young enough to fight tires & tires were easier to break off the rim. Today's tires are tougher & I'm older. Either get a patch kit or alloy wheels. My money is on the wheels.

I also carry the stop-n-go plug kit w/ slime electric compressor. Don't need to have glue (which is usually dried up when you go to use it) w/ the plugs. Also, the amount of CO2 bottles required to inflate a 180/65-16 tire is like 8-10, if it's done perfectly. I plugged my tire and rode it out another 7000 miles until the tread was gone, and was always careful to keep it under 100 mph w/ that repaired tire :-)

To keep the glue from drying out, transfer the glue to an old finger nail polish bottle. All you have to do is clean it out real good with acetone. I did this three years ago and to glue is still good to go.
