Changing sprocket teeth. Who's done it?
Thinking about changing gearing my 2011 CVO SG. What are the pluses and minus' of such a move. One mecanic told me you have to have a special belt and it's expensive, plus you need a spare to keep with you on long trips. And how many teeth do you drop? Speedo calibration?

Did the 49 tooth to my 08 and love it. Best money I have ever spent. Dawg might chime in as I think he did the same thing. Changed my speedo cal with the tmax and all is working just fine. I guess it depends on your tuner and such. I think no matter which way you go you will mess with the speedo cal. Don't quote me though. The Tmax is a great unit. I am thinking there is also another tuner you can do it with though to.

3 ways to change it with primary smaller front gear (but you lose the compensator)next is bigger gear on cluth basket only real drawback is u may lose cruise unless you tune with tmax or tts.other is smaller front pully belt can be a drawback although some have used the stock belt.

I've changed the stock 32 tooth tranny pulley to a 30 tooth pulley. I had to install a new 07 Sporty belt to make it work though. The stock belt is 137 teeth and the sporty belt is 136 teeth (I'm almost positive but check to make sure). Either way you only need to drop one tooth.
Lots more torque where I like it. I can use 6th gear at 62 MPH with out lugging the engine. It did throw the speedo off by 4 MPH and I live with that.

Probably the best way to change gearing is as DaFish has. You get a 32/30 = 107%, in other words 7% increase in rear wheel torque, which is well worth having over and above any tuning mods you may have.
Harley use a new design of compensator for the TC96, compared with the TC88 and earlier bikes and it will not 'fit' into a smaller sprocket. A 30T is available, but it doesn't have the compensator. A larger clutch sprocket is available but expensive.

Changing to a 23T from a 25T will give you 25/23 = 109% or a 9% increase in rear wheel torque. It will change engine speed in top from say 2,500 to 2,500 x 1.09 = 2,717rpm. A 24T will give roughly half those changes and changing the clutch from 36 to 37 will have only a very small change. Not worth the cost!

This conversion has come up before on HDF, so do a search on 'compensator' to see what other members have done. It won't take long to answer your question. Best of luck!
