Comp & Primary Bearing Issues Oh My!
#12
Can anyone explain the symptoms of premarure IPB bearing failure please. I've noticed lately that if I'm hard on the throttle I can feel a grinding feeling comming through the bike. It's hard to explain but its there and only noticable when I'm hard on the throttle. Cruising I dont feel a thing though.

I'm certainly no chemical engineer nor am I an engineer of any sort. But I am a long time owner of Harleys. I would tend to think the problem was more an issue with poor bearings before I was ready to tar and feather the synthetic and dino lubricants. Most riders who put a lot of miles on their bikes (20k and up per year) know that the last few years we have been plagued with external bearings (wheels etc,) as well as internal engine bearings which fail all too soon. The last few years the engineering boys at Harley have been doing a lot of things on the cheap just to save money on manufacturing. When you build something on the cheap it will eventually start to show up. The trouble with that scenario is that for many part time riders it will not blow until 24 months have passed and then you know who pays for it. I might be all wet but I am leaning toward faulty and cheap bearings before I suspect a lubrication problem. If it were not for the fact that I had three bearings fail in the first twenty months of ownership, I might think differently. The last one was the front wheel bearing at 33,000 miles.
