I've been using a product called Eagle 1 "Never Dull" wadding polish. It comes in a can and is available at the local Wally World. It removes boot marks and melted plastic off the pipes when they are cold. This stuff does not scratch or leave any marks on the chrome. It also puts a spectacular shine on chrome and wipes off without much elbow grease.

Ya know.... I read this before and I thought it sounded nuts. Then one day I was riding and one of those shopping bags was blowing down the road and just at the last second it popped up into my pipes. What a friggin mess. Oven cleaner wouldn't even touch it. I tried carefully carving/scraping it off with a knife - no luck. Last resort was to use steel wool (actually stainless steel wool) that I had lying around. I figured it couldn't look any worse. Huh, it works! And it doesn't leave a scratch.

I now use it to take burned on bugs off, and melted boots, road grime... you name it. Pipes look great.
