Default Oil cooler idea

Ive read many of the threads concerning oil coolers. Wasnt an issue on my water cooled Hondas. The last air cooled bike I owned was a 75 KZ900.

Ive never been a fan of the traditional oil cooler. Seeing where these mount I dont like them even more.

Heres my idea, tell me what you think.

I bought a used football aircleaner. My plan is to mock it up on the driver side, if it looks ok, stick an airhorn behind it. I mostly bought it because its a new takeoff and has a new filter in it, I got it for $10.

Why couldnt I install a sandwich adapter, keep the HD oil filter in place and add a second remote filter behind the faux air cleaner? I would be adding 1.5-2 qts additional oil

Or, why cant I use the sandwich adapter and mount my own cooler and spend less than $100 instead of $250+.

BTW - what are the two pipe plugs in the front of the oil filter mount for?

I am not sure why people want to go to so much work and trouble to get less oil cooling than the Harley oil cooler mounted in the front frame position. Why do you want TWO oil filters? What would that accomplish besides lower oil pressure? And putting it right next to the cylinders, the hottest place on the engine, would not do much for your cooling.

That must be one big oil filter you're trying to hide if it holds an additional 1.5 - 2 Qts of oil....

I've had the HD premium oil cooler on two bikes. Both coolers worked well and I've never had an issue with leaks. If you order from a 20% off dealer, you're talkng just over $200. Money well spent IMO.

If you don't like the location of the HD cooler than you may want to look into a Jagg vertical cooler which mounts on the front down tube.

Regardless of what cooler you get, an adapter with a thermostat is required. This adapter comes in the HD premium oil cooler kit.

A thermostat is not required and you can get the adapters from Jagg with or without the device. Once you have the adapter in place you can do anything your heart desires as far as an oil cooler. Whether it works efficiently or not is in your hands at this point. If you try and use the pipe plugs in lieu of the adapter, you will bypass the factory oil filter.

I think the plugs are there to plug the holes where the factory drilled the oil passages to/from the oil filter...

If you're trying to get by on the cheap . . . you can use the Power Steering Oil Cooler from a 1970's era Ford. See your local auto parts dealer or Pick-A-part if you're got the time. This mod would probably actually look kind of cool on a Rat Bike Project . . . but for my money I like and use the MoCo Oil Cooler.
