I went with the Hog Tunes w/out an amp. When I first put them in, I thought they were a huge improvement. Now, I'm just as dissapointed as I was with the stockers.
I just ordered a set of new Hogtune Hybrid speakers for my 2003 Ultra. Gonna try'em first without the amp. If necessary I'll install the amp later. FYI - Pulling the out fairing off is simple !! Just take your time.
Tried the Harley Boom Audio speakers. At least a 30% increase in usable volume. Sound quality was great and bass response was far superior to the stock speakers. And.....No amp.
I did the same. Added Boom speakers in front and bass kit in the tour pack. Much better sound quality and @ 1/2 volume at 70 mph I can hear my music fine with a full face helmet. Will an amp get me anything other than more volume? I don't even use close to max now.
I bought the J&M 7.25 speakers and a J&M amp. I put the speakers in and ran out of time to do the amp-so I buttoned it back up and rode my bike. Huge improvement. I thought about returning my amp it was so much improved. A few days later I installed the amp and it was a small improvement overe just the speakers. If I did it again I would not do the amp.

Installed the speakers this weekend without the amp. Sounds great sitting in the garage ... a noticeable improvement.
Haven't had a chance to ride it yet due to crummy weather. I'll provide anouther update after getting it on the road.
