Question Folks, Is there any reason why I can't leave this turned down just enough to hold throttle while interstate riding? Will I shorten the life( shavings and such) by leaving it this way and manually decelerating when I need to.
You just never know when the knuckle head in front of you is going to do something crazy, It's your life but it only takes a split second for something to go terribly wrong.
Always did that on my Dyna . Just adjust it so you can return it easily. My older bikes didn't have a return on the throttle so you had to manually return them. AND.. you can aleways use your clutch to disengage if needed.
I never used the throttle lock on my Dyna, I always used a slip on plastic paddle type "cruise control" that slipped over the right grip. I never used it unless I was going on a long trip. Frankly, the throttle lock made me wonder what the engineers were thinking...I never thought it was a good idea, but that's my humble opinion. Heck, I still use the plastic paddle thing on my Ultra, but I haven't quite taken to bike electronics yet...
I use mine on wide open interstate riding. However if there are hills and valleys your speed will very up and down and if riding with a group this can be a pain.
The safe thing for riders with little to no riding experience is to leave that thing alone. It can and will get you into a bad way if you're not very careful about when you use it and how tight you make it. A throttle rocker (cramp buster) is far safer - but even these need some getting used to.
If you're interested, I removed mine wheel and installed Cruise Mate throttle lock. It uses a lever that locks/unlocks the throttle in about a quarter turn. I've had mine for 3 years and love it. Not as nice as cruise control, but much cheaper.
Run the throttle lock turned to hold the throttle all the time , run it with a S&S carb with a return cable as well. Runs great, find it invaluable on the highway or in town when I need my hand free for whatever reason. All that wears it a small plastic shoe over time that is cheap and easy to replace.
