Tell your buddy to trade for a 2011 . . . That's what I did and it has a 180.

I do know that he can go a little wider than stock but he may have to trim some off the plastic belt guard to make it fit. No way a 180 it will fit though.

Lots of us running 160/80-16 Dunlop E3's on the 2007's....works fine. A 180 will not fit without major surgery.

It can be done, but it's not as simple as buying a wheel and tire.

The big problem is the fender. The swingarm is apparantly wide enough. But you have to widen the fender, either by ripping it down the middle and adding about an inch wide strip of sheet metal, or by modifying a 09 fender by narrowing it so it fits between the frame rails. One of our forum members (Timberland) has done that with a couple of bikes and is running a 180 on an 18x5.5 wheel.

Klock Werks and Hogpro both have wide tire kits for pre-09 touring bikes, for about 1800 bucks. In both cases, a new fender is part of the deal, and with the Hogpro kit, a wider swingarm, too. Klock Werks, intrestingly enough, doesn't include a wider swingarm, but does have different pulleys. In neither case is a wheel or tire included, so the cost really ramps up quickly. If you go with one of the kits, I can easily see how it could wind up costing 3K.

If you just want to run the widest tire that will fit between the existing fender, it's a 160, and you might need to trim the belt guard.

No belt guard trimming needed on the 07 with the E3 160/80/16 Tyre.

What is stock rim width on the 07s? A 160 on a 3" rim (which earlier bikes have) sounds too much tyre to me! I have a 150/80 on my 3" rim, which I understood is as big as I should go on my rim.

07 SG with E3 160. Not all that impressive really. Works well though.
Tire is a wee bit taller so be careful if you are going to lower your bike anymore than 1 inch.

Timberline did it right though... His 180 conversion looked awesome!
