Default '09 Touring tire choices Fall 2010

Hey all,

It's time to get my 2nd set of replacement tires for the '09 Road King standard... I got 19,600 out of the first set and am now looking at 19,000 for this set.

Last year when I got new tires only H-D carried them for the '09 and I went with those obviously. Sure can't complain about the wear/mileage I've gotten from them!

I've not really heard if the situation is the same TODAY as it was last year - meaning is there a CHOICE yet other than the H-D Dunlop D407/D408 tires for an '09 RK standard?

I called my Dealer and they quoted $400 out the door for JUST the rear tire! Seems a bit much for one tire as I can get almost a full set of tires on my wife's Corolla for that much.

What choices do i have in Nov 2010 for tires now? I called my favorite Indy mechanic and he quoted me $488 for a SET of Dunlop Elite 3's out the door for my bike. He said he cannot get the H-D tires for the '09 as the MoCo still has some sort of lock on availability of them. He said these Elite 3's are the alternative and they're available for the '09 Touring bikes.

There's also a Metzeler tire and Avon if I remember correctly.

I'm a conservative rider and am not concerned so much about performance as I am about MILEAGE/wear as I log a buttload of miles each year and need to get at least 15k out of a rear tire. I remember only getting about 9k out of a rear Metzeler once on my '05 EGC and would prefer to get much more mileage than that. So I'm hoping this Dunlop Elite 3 gets similar mileage the D407's do.

Do any of you have any commentary on these other choices? Have you used these alternatives on the '09 Touring bike and gotten good service from them?

Thanks!
