+1 on both. I run (and always have) a Jagg cooler, never had a problem with them. I don't run a thermastat (something else to go wrong) but have a leather cover for those 'cold' days. Mine is the vertical mount which also comes in horizontal that mounts the same as HD's but is 10 row

Another vote for the cooler first. Spend money first on a part that actually does something, then get the gauge later if you want to.

I've been wanting a gauge for my RK for quite a while, just no good solutions other than the LCD dipstick that I don't really care for. I was one of those that had bad luck with them.... Anyway, saw a post about JES Custom Accents and am giving it a try. It's a really nice piece and a clever way to get an analog dipstick to work in the FL engine oil pan with the angle on the stock dipstick. Great communication from Joseph. I emailed him with a question and he called me Friday night about 30 minutes after I emailed him. Super nice guy and great service. Check them out. Might be a good (and cheaper) solution to getting your gauge and oil cooler at the same time.... JESCustomAccents

A gauge will tell you how hot your oil is, which is interesting, but then what? Get a cooler, it does something very useful for your engine.
By the way, I have a HD Premium oil cooler and no gauge.

I'm doing both this winter. I figure I may as well put in the temp gauge while I have the oil drained to put in the cooler anyway.

I'd do the oil cooler, at least it does something useful.

Seriously what is a gauge gonna do for ya?

On my '08 I put the oil temp gauge in because, well because the air temp gauge was useless and inacturate. I looked at it a couple of times and thought, why did I put that in. I should have spent that money on a cooler. So on my '09 I bought the cooler first and still haven't done the gauge.
