Question Electrical problem 05 ultra

I'm sure it's a ground somewhere just looking for some help on where to start. Went on our toy run yesterday, left the house all's fine waiting to leave on run had someone ask me to see what my led fender extension looked like with the brake on,turned on the bike stepped on the brake every-thing's fine left on the run, no speedo, tach, blinkers, brake lights. checked the 15 amp.assy. fuse blown of course changed it turned the bike on every-thing's ok. mile or so down the road, No speedo etc. Changed the fuse at home and it blows as soon as I turn on ignition.I'm just hoping someone and can point me in the right direction. Been tracing wires trying to find a ground but no luck.

First place to look is at the handlebar, make sure you have not pinched the wires where they go thru the goove. Loosen the screws for the lever (pull brake lever and put piece of cardboad in opening), and switch housing and push wires into the grove. If not go to last thing you worked on.

check under the left side of your gas tank....there is a wire for either the fuel gauge or fuel pump that exits under there. It will sometimes drop and be contacted by the front rocker box assembly....heat and chaffing will cause the insulation to be compromised. It is Not until your motor starts vibrating that it makes contact in just the right place. Washing your bike could have moved the wire from its original postion and caused the problem. This is on the same circuit as all the other instruments that you mention.

Dont ask me how I know.....took me a while to find it.

Take the outer fairing off, there is a bundle of wires that crosses from left to right over the radio. On the left side it passes by the vertical fairing bracket, the wires are not protected and will chafe on that bracket. Depending on what wires chafe dictates what happens to the bike. On my bike it took out exactly what is out on yours, on my buddy's bike it took out the ignition. Find the wires that are chafed, fix them, then put a piece of wire loom around the wires to protect it from happening again. Steve

Steve, Thanks, I've been checking wires under the fairing and couldn't find anything so I thought I'd put a fuse in with the outer fairing off to see if I could see an arc when I plugged it in and to my surprise the fuse didn't blow. But what did I do? Still didn't want to put the fairing back together till I found the prob. Then I checked the FORUM one more time and there you were, and that's what it was. the wires were all taped and seemed fine except for what seemed like a small dent in it, so I cut it open with a knife and the rest is history. THANKS AGAIN!!!!! From Charleston SC.

No problem............it's a very common problem that hits at the worst time. I fixed mine 2 years ago, and haven't had any problems since. I did my buddy's last year, and his is fine so far as well. That 6" of wire loom was too much for the Moco to spend..............LOL Steve
