Performance vs Economy

Performance vs Economy
This thread is not necassarily for baggers. I put it here because I own a bagger.
Ok, I wanted to open a discussion with four questions and it's not limited to just these questions because I understand that certain engine configurations can and do have an effect on what will be discussed. I'm hoping those types of configurations will be talked about. So HERE we go!
1) After dyno tuning for performance, did your gas mileage remain the same, get better or go down?
2) With those performance gains, did your bike run better and or was it smoother?
3) Did the performance gains from your dyno tune over shadow any gas mileage issues?
4) Can you get exceptional performance and good gas mileage?

1. I went from a stage one to 255 cams and my fuel mileage increased slightly.
2. Definately smoother with better throttle response and less engine heat.
3. No. Most people ride harder (accelerate harder) after getting performance mods but if you try to ride as you normally do, you could increase fuel economy unless you build something more radical than the average guys perfomance upgrades.
4. Absolutely.

1) I had a slight drop in mileage, but nothing too major. I still get in the mid 40's when I measure the mileage which is when I going on a road trip.
2) It runs better, especially at higher speeds and rpms.
3) Yes. I ride two up a lot and with the upgrades there is no hesitation when accelerating when the bike is fully loaded.
4) I'd say no. One is going to suffer and the expense of the other. This does not mean you can't have good perforance and get good mileage too, but the more you strive to get into that "exceptional" range, then one is going to suffer at the expenense of the other.

1) A good tune should not make your fuel economy go down. A FI bike can be tuned for both economy and performance. A higher performance bike works less to acheive the same goals. I.E. when you are on a trip and you have a 100HP bike, the bike isn't working as hard as, say, a stock bike. Now when you are getting on it, that's a differn't story. But then again, when you are giving it hell the last things you are worried about is fuel economy.
2) A bike should run better with performance improvments, kind've the point right?
3) Not on mine. Current set up is 110", 259E cams (soon to be T-man 662-1's), 10.8:1 compression, FatCat exhaust and SERT. Averaged 46 MPG from Indianapolis to Sandusky, Ohio packed with gear at an average speed of 89.2 MPH (GPS) so i'd say for me my fuel economy is fine.
4)Yeppers.
Good topic Producer. Thanks.

I get 40 - 45 mpg consistantly (never below 40mpg even riding hard).

I see a lot of people asking "if I do whatever engine mod will it effect my fuel mileage?" I don't understand why that is a major concern. No "normal" properly set up engine mod is going to effect fuel mileage by more than about 10% max. So instead of getting 200 miles between fill ups you might only get 180. Is that a major issue? If you don't have a peanut tank what does it matter?
I am honestly not trying to be a jerk, I just don't understand. Did any of us decide to buy a HD because it gets good mileage? It certainly wasn't one of my decision points....

I too, went from an 88" to 95".
1) It went down slightly. If I ride conservatively, then I really don't notice it.
2) It runs better.
3) Absolutley! Two up riding is far more enjoyable.
4) Exceptional Performance AND good gas mileage, I'd say No. You can get good/great performace but as mentioned, one will sacrifice the other. I had my bike tuned by a local very reputable tuner, and he said I could have gotten you better numbers on paper, but your gas mileage would suck. He said he tuned for right to edge of decent gas mileage.
