I just had the front replaced on my 2009 with the 408 via the recall. The TSB only dealt with the front tire cupping, nothing about the rear. My guess the reason they have a 408 for the rear was to match the tread pattern with the front 408. Right now mine are opposite since I still have the original 407 on the rear.

Any chance you might have made a good burn out vid of the old tire before you changed it out for the new one, or am I the only one that does that?
The front tire on the 2010 were changed to the 408. The rear is still 407's All Dunlop did was reverse the direction arrow in the mold to reverse the tread direction. Something I was told they wanted to do for 09's but HD wouldn't go for it.

I replaced mine on my 2009 Ultra SECU at 16000. I weigh 250lbs and ride hard. I only $108 for my Dunlop at my dealer. They charged me $65 to mount it. You got screwed.

So there is no rear 408? Figures, I assumed hd_rolling knew what he had on his 2010.

There was a time when I thought 7000 miles was ok mileage on a tire change.
I got almost 14,000 on my D407 before I bought a new one.
Most of my riding buddy's are in the same boat with 12K to 16K before replacing theirs.
I'm going to be sticking with the Dunlops.

Ok, learned something new today. D 407 on the rear, confirmed!

All i ever checked was the front to make sure it was a D408 on my bike after reading all the recall threads on here, saw the front was good and just assumed it was front and rear.

I would have used the Chrome points for chrome but that's just me.

7,000 miles is pretty low for a rear 407. Some guys have 15,000 miles on theirs. I have 11,000 miles on mine and it's good for another 1,000 miles before I install the American Elite. We ride 2-up 99% of the time and the roads in Western PA are pretty tough on tires, as you know.
Running with the right pressure makes a huge difference in terms of handling and longevity. I put 42psi in it.

I believe the American Elite is made in the US but I'm not completely sure.

Where are you in Western PA and what dealer charged you so much?
I live in Bridgeville, 3 miles off I 79. The dealer was the closest one to me, near the Meadows. Send me a pm and I'll email you a copy of the invoice, pdf.

Email me your invoice if you want frenchbiker <at> gmail <dot> com
All I can say is Steel City gave you the shaft. You could have saved $150 by buying your tire on the web and have an independent mechanic mount and balance it on your bike.
I live in Blawnox, off 28N and my closest dealer is 3 Rivers HD. He doesn't touch my bike except for warranty work.
By the way, I was at Steel City for their Halloween Party 2 weeks ago.

I also was at the Halloween Party. Got a couple free beers and a sandwich! I did know what the deal was before I went there. The tire cost me 47 out of pocket, plus the chrome points. I started this thread to let people know what the alternatives are, not to bash this dealer. Someone has to pay for the the beer, sandwiches, band and the new beautiful state of the art building!!

Actually a very good dealership IMO.
