I took a trip with mine as soon as I got it. The bike ran great and was all broken in when I got back. Did the 1000 mile and everything has been fine.
Now I just have to sit out the winter which stinks.

The only thing I would be concerned about is what speed will your buddies be going down the highways.Trying to not hold one steady speed may not work if their going 70-80 down the road.Might be a good idea to have meeting places incase you fall back.
I bought my bike out of state and rode it home.I was by myself so it was easy for me to break up the speeds without worrying about anyone else.

I have a friend that bought a '08 RG new a couple of years ago. In the deal he negotiated the first service free. On the morning he picked up the bike he stopped to schedule the 1000 service. When they asked when he thought he'd need it he replied "tomorrow". The service mgr. said "you can't get enough mileage in one day", so my friend bet him a free service that he'd do it. His first two services were free! Go on the ride! My friend & I still ride together & he's had no problem with his bike.

Go on the trip. Best way to break it in. When I bought my Ultra I lived in Memphis, TN and bought the bike from Barnett Harley in El Paso, TX. They had a fly in ride it home program. They paid for my flight out to El Paso and I rode it back to Memphis, straight to the dealer for the 1k service. The first day riding it home I did 800 miles. Total miles to get back home was 1,174

Interstate riding & maintaining a constant speed for hundreds of miles is easy during the break in period. All you have to do is downshift to 5th and ride, then shift back to 6th and ride. Your mpg will suffer slightly but you can maintain speed and stay with the group...

+1

I would also add that you should forget you have cruise control for the first 1000 miles.

I say go for it. When I picked up my bike while on R&R leave from Iraq, I rode every chance I got. I was able to put 700 miles on her in just over a week of ridin here and there, was fun as hell to. Going from a sportster to a limited is extremely nice.. I leave this damn sand box in 4-5 months and gonna schedule the 1k during my first week home. After that, gonna see what shes got. I have not been over 85 with her yet and varied the rpm's from 2000-3500, so I think she is about broke in enough. Have slip ons waitin for me when I get off the plane, hehehe. Take care everyone.

I wish I had a trip like that to go on to break her in.
I had my bike 6 weeks and have 700 mi on her.
In need of a good tune instead of crappy dealer map.
JD here I come!
