All insurance contracts have some fine print about the owners responsibility to ensure it is road worthy. Unless you get it in writing from your broker that a car tire is OK they have the legal option to contest it. After an accident an independent adjuster working for the company will look at the bike - unless it is a minor claim in which case they will just take the repair shops word. The bigger the claim the more they will look into it.
Not sure what it is like in the US but in Canada bikes have to get a road worthiness safety inspection every 1-2 years depending on province and they affix a sticker to the forks with an expiry date. If you are in a traffic stop with an out of date sticker or without one the bike gets towed and there is a ~$400 fine. Bikes with a car tire or tires worn to the wear bars will not pass inspection.
Where in Canada? Not in Ontario.

+1. Interestingly, I've heard from some basically non-mechanical riders (I'm being kind here) about that magazine article that totally contested CT's. They read it and swallowed the coolaid without the first thought that the mag has tire ads that supply their paychecks, and the fact that the author was blowing smoke, mixing fact and fiction to create the illusion of competence.

I recall years ago when I worked for a cedar mill, the foreman had a tiltbed pickup truck with 10" rims on it that we used to haul scrap from the mill over to our junkyard/burn pit, which was some seriously treacherous terrain.
When the tires wore out on it, he put regular narrow car tires on it, the beads (I don't know HOW they got it to bead) were wider than the tread! Everyone said it wouldn't work; they would pop off at the first bump, the sidewalls would be punctured and so forth. Years later, those tires were still on there, although we did get stuck a lot. They went through absolute torture every day, five days a week.
Sometimes the "box" isn't all there is.
