I have the HD adjustable backrest and only use it when needed. Which is 100% of the time.
I never take it off. But it would fit in the saddlebag if I wanted it too.
Have the adjustable one and never take it off or even adjust it. Helps me when I have to back the bike up to use both legs and back, much easier and that alone is reason to get one.
YES! I can't believe that for cvo's they don't include the adjustable backrest!!!! Even that one doesn't impress much. They need one that is vastly adjustable to wear I can sit back as far as I want on an ultra. I don't use it now because it sits me forward way too much. Feels like you're riding a scooter. HARLEY! Make a good backrest!! And make a top end bike that has the best of everything. PERIOD.
I have a mustang backrest on my SG, nothing better on a long ride. What makes it especially nice, its small enough to pack it in my saddlebag only to be brought out when needed.

By your name I would guess you have an '06 Ultra. HD designed a new backrest starting in 2009. They are much better. I had the old style on my '08 and I agree it was terrible. Take a look at the new design. Especially the adjustable one, it's kinda like the Mustang setup.
I really like my adjustable HD but the pad does move around a bit. I think the slack can be tightened up some with thicker nylon bushings. My only beef with it is the tall post it sits on. I didn't like the look with my stock RG seat. I almost cut it down 4" but ended up getting an Ultra seat instead.
Works for me, but like i said I must have a six-sigma body for the Harley seat. Mine is really comfortable. Looks like here in Orlando I get to ride home in the rain tonight, Yuk!
