K&N filter in a stock backing cover is not good enough for a stage 1. It will save you from replacing the air cleaner when filthy because you could clean and reuse the K&N. However, if you want a stage 1, you would get the open backplate.

If you like the 'football', this is the 'cheap' way to go.
A co-rider just drilled a bunch of 3/4" holes in his backing plate.

Default K&N filter

If I use a K&N filter in the stock box. Will I have to remap?

I replaced my stage 1 filter with a K&N, the HD one never seemed to get clean.

No luck cleaning the HD filters either. Waste of time, the K&N's come out like new. Usually overoil them and have to wipe off motor for a few rides.
