1.Fill the tank full of quality fuel and stabilizer, that way the tank will not rust.
2.Change your engine oil
3.Put a battery tender on
4.If possible lift the bike so that the tires are not on the ground.
5.Cover the bike but not with plastic i.e cotton cover.
6.Crack open a beer (Canadian not one of those American near beers)
7.Relax

Battery tender, fuel stabilizer with a full tank, breathable cover if garaged. Been doing this drill for years w/no problems

I believe the topic has been covered, but I would add that another reason to lift the bike, if not riding for a while, is for the spring on the jiffy. The weight can cause the spring to sprung.
