I had the same issue and the gap is pretty close in the front now. The issue I believe is that the factory trim ring is to big. Once you slide the new trim over the factory one off of the bike you will notice at least on my bike that the new trim ring will not completely close because it hits the factory ring. I think by using a clamp you might bring the factory one slightly out of round and it closes. Another engineering marvel produced by HD.

Same thing happened to me with one of the extended rings I put on my 09 Road King. Later, I was at the dealer and saw a Screaming Eagle Road King and the bezel on it extended out far enough to completely cover the edge of the bulb. I asked the parts guy about it and, lo and behold, it's a "Contoured Headlamp Trim Ring", one piece, replaces the original trim ring instead of fitting over it. I put it on my bike and love it.
Part number is 69403-03.

couldn't find a part with that number but found this one 69604-03 - same one as you are talking about?

Yes, that's it. Looks same, shape wise, as the original, but is extended out a bit and covers the edges of the bulb assembly, (with the stock original ring installed). My (2009) parts catalog's number for it must have changed since I got it.
(Edit: Nope, it didn't change, I typed in the wrong p/n... where's my glasses when I need 'em?)
