I tightened mine with 3/8 ratchet thought the bolt was going to twst off, it would not tighten the shift arm on the transmission shaft. finally took off the arm squezed it in a vice. Had to tap it on the shaft with a hammer. Put the bolt back in and it tightened fine.

Wow, lots of work having to pull off the primary to be able to tap that arm back on with a hammer. Not great for the tranny shaft either. They make a modified arm for those with that problem, and no hammer is required, but you will need to still pull the primary. In many cases however, just replacing the existing bolt with a longer threaded bolt, no collar, corrects the problem. Not sure about your year and if the bolt has a collar, but Its easy to check. If it doesn't have a collar, replace the bolt anyway as they tend to stretch when over tightened. Many times, this is all it takes.

Rick is right about adding a longer bolt with a nut. That's my mode of last resort; I found that it was easier to simply replace the $40 part. The linkage part has threads that are softer than the rod they fit around, so with time the wear enough to not stay tight. I found that opening the area up and re-attaching it with blue LocTite and a new Allen bolt only bought me a little time until it came loose again. Now that I replaced the part with a new $40 part it has not come loose again. I'm assuming here that your linkage part is the front part that attaches to the shifter levers and not the rear linkage that attaches the tranny to the shift linkage rod.

If the screw is coming loose use blue Loctite. Not sure if that is what you mean but I have had the same problem.

Had the front linkage come off the the peg shifters shaft today on the Spaghetti bowl freeway section in Las Vegas. Rode it to the Henderson HD exit as did not know the extent of the situation. Was locked into 6th gear and had to work it that way till I could get off the freeway and to a safe point to see it was just off the front shaft and just needed re-attaching and tightened down. Will have to see if it keeps loosening back up or just the shop did not tighten enough after they replace my 2nd failed tranny main shaft bearing (#8967) last week.

If your talking about the shift arm that comes off the shift shaft behind the primary, the splines on the arm and or shaft may be worn.May have to replace both or at least the arm.
