I carried two MSR fuel bottles with me. Never used them. That was about half a gallon. So that was 20 miles I would not have to walk if I ran out of gas!! Did 185 miles on the Alaska Highway between gas stops one time, but that was between premium gas stops. After that, I just gave up and used regular with octane boost. Very few stations have premium! Finding regular gas is not really a problem except at night. It was a little over 120 miles on the Dalton to get from the Yukon River crossing to and back from the Arctic Circle. That is the only gas station on that section of the Dalton. Got to be careful as to the time you are traveling on the Dalton, as they even closed at 7 pm in the evening!!

The state university in Fairbanks rents dorm rooms out during the summer months for $35.00 a night (rate was in 2009) . The Harley dealership in Anchorage has free camping with shower room on site.

this ( www.talonair.com/talfish.html ) was one hell of a good time

I arrived in Fairbanks on June 21 around 8 pm and could not find a room anywhere. Duh, it was the day of summer solstice which is a big deal in Fairbanks!! Ended up going on to Chatanikta and staying at the gold mine camp lodge about 30 miles from Fairbanks:

Ended up spending two nights with Ron and Shirley, the owners. This was a nice base "camp" for doing the Dalton highway. It was also a great ride out the Steese Highway too! It was a great experience staying at the lodge and they had "cheap" rates compared to all the motels in Alaska and very good food! I would recommend it.

Default Talk About Timing...

I'm killing time perusing Google Maps as I consider routes into Alaska from Dallas. I love the street view function Google Maps offers and I selected it right at the Alaska state line heading northwest. Take a look at the image it yielded. This guy is immortalized!

I'll second what Bottles said. From Deadhorse down is a cool blog, not sure if it is what your looking for. Please do us all a favor and document the chit out of your ride of a lifetime. Have fun!
