Formula+ works very well in the primary and since that's what was originally in there, why switch? JMO

$14.99 for a quart of Amsoil is cheap if you consider how much per mile it actually boils down to.
An Amsoil replacement in all three holes is only $75 bucks.
The dealer gets $390.00 and uses their Syn3 garbage.
Do the math and don't skimp quality to save 2 dollars.
Hold your self righteous horses there, buckeroo. Apparently you misunderstood the post. We are talking about what oil we put in the primary. I still run Amsoil 20-50 V-Twin motorcycle oil in the engine. Amsoil Severe Gear 75-90 in the tranny. For my own reasons I chose not to run it in the primary. WalMart crap does very well in the primary. Whether it be oil or ATF. Thank you very much. By the way if your are paying $14.99 for a quart of Amsoil you are getting screwed.

Wal-Mart crap huh. Well you might be right. However, some of you might find this article useful.

Redline Heavy Shockproof in the trans...have tried others, but this was the only one that i really noticed any difference...

HD Formula+ in the primary...not sayin its the best...i've read its just 40w oil...but i like the way the clutch feels...tried B&M syn and i felt some clutch chatter...

I'm currently using Amsoil 20W50 in the primary and engine, Severe Gear 75W90 in the transmission.

Amsoil is severly overpriced and is not better than Moble 1 Syn or whatever is out there.

Do you really think there is much difference, if any at all, between brands? Look at racing teams if you need proof. Do ALL teams use the same brand in their racing engines? Nope. Use whatever company is paying for sponsership and supplying free oil.

If there truly was a "best" motor oil every racing team would be using the same stuff. They don't. Think about this. NASCAR Engines run at 8-9 THOUSAND RPMS for 500 miles and no common motor oil is used between the teams. This is all you need to know.

Change every 2500-3000 miles and it does not matter one bit what oil you choose to use.
I pretty much agree. Been driving 40 years and never had an engine problem of any kind. I've had a few accessories wear out and need replacement but the heart of the vehicle of every type was durable enough to last as long as I needed the vehicle. I always burned whatever oil was available and changed it and filter every 3,000 miles. It all works the same. I therefore conclude that most if not all of the brand related testimonial stuff is bunk. Plain, ordinary bunk. Or you can call it advertising, if you prefer.

I've run HD Formula+, Amsoil, and Redline Primary. The clutch feel degraded (slippery) with the Amsoil and both the HD Formula+ and the Redline have a solid feel. I'm good with either of the latter, but since I may leave it in there for up to 10k, will opt for the protection of the Redline.

I think as far as the motor goes, I have some Castrol Synthetic I'll use, but after readin that Redline Testimonial, it's hard not to try it in the primary and tranny. I think it will best serve tge tranny though, they didn't convince me on the primary as much. Bel Ray also makes seperate fluids for each hole, but you just never hear anyone using them.

I always wondered what HD engineer came up with that idea?

Seems to me I remember the oil was allowed to drip out of the primary on my "47 Knuckle giving rise to the "oil leaker" tag that Harleys had. How was the oil scavanged back?
Not trying to hijack just curious
The engine had a breather that would suck the oil, along with contaminants back into the engine from the primary chaincase. The clutch was a dry clutch so the oil was only used to lube the primary chain. It was a balancing act to set it to just barely drip enough to lube the chain but not get oil into the clutch basket. It always did!

The drive chain oiler had a screw that you could control how much oil was leaked onto the drive chain. I turned mine off and lubed the chain by hand so it wouldn't mark it's spot everywhere it was parked.

Just put Syn 3 in all three holes and everything seems fine. I probably change my oil sooner than I need to, always have in all my vehicles, but for the price of oil I figure what the hell.
Next change I may try something different in the primary and tranny, we'll see when the time comes I guess.
