Maybe visit a dealer and see if they have any shields in stock. They will probably allow you to attach one to the bike to see how you like the height.

If that doesn't work, test the SG as suggested.
My though process was the touring frame (either RK or SG) has saddlebags, increased load capacity, 12v powerpoints, in addition to the windshield....all benefits if he is going to be doing alot of bike camping. even with a bag and tent strapped on the backseat, it's nice having a place to keep extra oil, tool roll, etc..

I know people do alot of bike camping on non-touring, I'm not in any way saying it's better or worse either way...but he already has been considering those bikes, and it was just food for thought...

I agree with the OP. For longer trips and for the camping thing, start looking for a touring bike. Test ride them all, and choose the one that fits. I rode my brother-in-laws Electroglide Classic before I bought my SG. Thought it was a little top heavy for me with all his crap in the tour pac. I go with just a sissy bar bag, and I am glad with my choice. I can add on anything a EC has, but have'nt yet. No need to. Have fun shopping.
