Get yourself a refurb iPod Nano. You can get an 8GB 5th gen Nano for $99.00 from the Apple store.
Apple Store
Their refurbs are completely checked and refreshed and carry the same warranty as a new one. I have one (3rd gen) and I bought one for my son (4th gen) and have never had a problem with either. You can't even tell they are refurbished. My 3rd gen is an 8GB and I currently have over 1600 songs and still have over a gig of capacity left.

+1 on the Sansa Clip Plus. I bought the 8 GB from Amazon for $55, and found a 16GB micro SD chip at Fry's for $20. So I've got a great sounding flash MP3 player with 24 gigs of memory for $75. It's small, doesn't need any special software, and I clip it on my windshield bad. Can't beat it for the price.

8 track player is useless unless you have a book of matches to put under the tape... I know all about 8 tracks but just lost at all this newfangled electronics
