What year is your RK? There should be a split in the seat (if it's a stock seat) that the backrest fits into after you attach the hardware to the rear fender and frame under the seat. My son has an '05 RKC and it has a split .. although it's a one piece seat not a 2 piece.

It is an 01 Rk with seperate driver seat and passanger pillion. after installing the backrest bracket neither the drive seat or passenger seat will go on.

Sounds like you went to the same school of "hey thats a cool part" then find out you have to spend more $$$ to make it fit/work on your bike... sound like your stock seat got replaced - From your post, you were able to install the back rest - like stated, a stock seat has a split in it ...

wont work with a 2 pc seat, only 1 pc seat with slit in it for the backrest to pass through.

Well after some modifications to both driver seat and passenger pillion I was able to make it fit. Had to remove some foam on both seats, remove the mounting bracket from drive seat and notch the paasenger pillion.
Thanks for the help last night.

On my 02 Roadking I had to replace the stock 2 piece seat with a 1 piece seat(sundowner). The only way to get the backrest to work with a 2 piece seat is with what you did.
