What do you think of these proposed engine mods?
higher compression pistons hd
cams andrews
cam gears set andrews
heads hd
ignition s&s
has anyone used a guy called Ray's place in chicago? I have a stock except for v&h longshots 2005 flhrs road king custom and I could stand a bit more power especially when passing in the 55-75mph range, the stock 88 is a dog. This is what the guy reccomended, how much do you think this would cost parts and labor? This will be my first engine mod ever and I can already feel like its a sickness, wanting more before it's done!

Why the gear drive and not the new hydraulic conversion kit, Andrews makes on of those as well? So does Harley, Woods etc. Not that I am arguing, just wondering. I replaced my tensioners w/ stock ones again, and will eventually convert to gears or hydraulics. I know very little about engine mods but I would try to stay w/ the same company as much as possible. For example, use S&S for the heads, cams and ignition. Just figure their parts may work better together. I put an SE 203 cam in my 88 and it helped wake it up a little, but you're right, they're kind of a dog though.

Sounds like you may not be happy with your selection already, but, you didn't give us enough details about the cams to respond correctly. I've never heard of Ray's PLace, but I would highly recommend Oak Lawn Harley on the southwest side. They are and old school type dealer and do awesome builds. Give them a call and talk to Kevin in service and ask all of the questions you want. I think, since we're heading into winter anyway, you shouold do a big bore, cams, mild head work and cam plate upgrade - if you can swing it.
Here's my build from Oak Lawn. It's a 2005 Ultra and they done the SE cam plate, HD Big Bore (95"), 211 cams, street port & polish and dyno. I'm very happy and haven't had 1 sec trouble out of it.
Good luck with your choices and remember that you get what you pay for. I will ad this, I would not have an engine done by someone without good first hand refferals.

If your crank is out of spec, you can't go gear drive. Forget all that S&S ignition stuff, you don't need it.
Take a look at T-Man Performance. You can get all the components for a good 95" kit for less than 2 grand, then add a TTS or SERT and you're good to go.

You asked what we think.....
Here's what I think.....
Go with a PROVEN kit by one of the performance companies.
You can also bump that 95" to a 98"....might as well get all you can, right?
Look at these companies:
Head Quarters
T-Man
Hillside
You'll get WAYYYY more bang for the buck with either of these kits.
That's what I think.
