Default Lighter Wiring Reversed - anyone else?

While trying to use my Garmin for a short trip this week, I discovered that my lighter plug did not seem to be working - my Garmin had no power. Plugged into the truck - good, bike no power. Tried another (phone) adapter, same-same. For some unknown reason, I pushed the lighter in and in 10 seconds could have burned my house down. I used a meter and discovered the lighter wiring seems reversed. Positive on the outside, negative core... Is that why in manual it says not to use the lighter to power electronic devices or did I just get a Friday - long weekend production bike??? I hate to think about getting in there to switch it around but really would like the power source...
