I've had seven Harleys in the past 25 years, and kept the stock pipes on all of them. There is enough LOUD in the world without me adding to it.
Amen brother on the noise, I just removed the Monster Ovals and went back to stock. Although the V&H had a really great sound, on long road trips it became a little tiring. The stock pipes on my '09 do have a better sound than the pipes on my '02 or '05 did. Harley has done a pretty good job lately with the sound.
You guys who say that the bike is "running pretty well" and "don't want to mess with it", have no idea. I picked up my SG with stock pipes and a/c and it seemed pretty anemic to me. I dropped it off at my indy the next day and had true duals, tuner, Ness a/c and Python mufflers installed. I never would have thought it was the same bike. Huge difference.
When I bought my bike I was going to hunt down a set of stock mufflers. After riding it now for a little over a month and about a 1K miles I hav e decided to leave the Kirker slip-ons on it, it sounds good while riding and does'nt seem to offend the citizenry.
Still running stock, no desire to change them. They have gotten louder as I get more miles on them. If I could get quieter pipes I would, maybe I just like living dangerously
I put V&H short shots on my sporty. I love my loud bike and no problems in Texas.
I just bought a 09 FLHT for the long haul. Plan on keeping the pipes stock as too many places are strapped for cash and using noise as an excuse for taking mine.
Why anyone would want to ride something that they need ear plugs with is beyond me. .
That was me until last thur, bought a new '11 Ultra Limited.
Compared to my RG,there is less wind noise from the fairing and with the stock exhaust,I can hear the radio at hidhway speeds without having an amp.
Now with the possibilty of smog testing, how much do I really want to mess with the exhaust?
