Default How long can you leave oil in a bike?

Have syn 3 in the crankcase. Haven't changed it in over a year. Haven't even put 2500 miles on my bike. Had a kid, bought a new house, blah blah blah. My question. How long is this stuff good for in the engine? Should I switch back to conventional oil if this is any indicator of the miles a year I'll do w/ my new lifestyle?

Leave it in there as long as you want, but most will agree that oil should be changed at least once a season. Some even suggest changing before putting her away for the winter. Put any oil you like in the crankcase, especially if you cannot get out and put that many miles on it. Currently I have Castrol GTX 20-50 in my engine and its just fine. Syn3 probably is overkill now that your lifestyle has changed.

Changing your oil once a year won't kill you. Find a time when a shop is running a special about free oil change with purchase of oil.
My local shop does that several times a year and they are money hungry bastards. lol

I'd always run synthetic oil in an air colled motor though. When you actually do get to ride it, there is no reason to take the chance of burning dyno oil.

Change it once a year, regardless of miles, and change it at the end of riding season to avoid moisture and contimants being in engine all winter. I would even consider using dino oil, if you ride less than 2500 miles a year.

Periodic oil changes are the most important preventative maintenance that one can do.

What are the storage conditions? If you keep the bike in a place where it is subject to condensation then def change it. That would be my primary concern. 2500 miles shouldn't have created too much contaminants. I'll bet it still looks pretty clean. Just find a half hour of your time and do it!

Gonna do all 3 fluids before I put it away this winter. I store it in a garage, probably not that bad for it, but it needs a change anyway at this point. Rehabbing this new house I got, and finding the time has been hard. Got new plugs to put in too. Gonna clean the air filter, lube cables, grease the neck bearings. Can anyone think of anything else? Let me know. Have some Castrol synthetic 4 quarts. Got any suggestions for the other fluids. Running the 20 50 in the primary, conventional oil sounds good. May just use more of the Castrol Syn for that.

Looks like you have most of the important stuff covered. Enjoy your new winter project (house) and heres hoping that you can put some miles on the ride next spring.
