Have an 08SG looking at new cams do I need gear drive or are the chain drive enough. Talked to 2 diff builders and got 2 totally diff answers. Just thought I see what any one else had to say on the subject.

I stayed with the chains in my 08 FLHX, DME 575L cams.

Unless you're doing an extreme build the chain drive cams are fine for 07 & later bikes, check the hydraulic tensioners if you have fairly high miles.

The stock chain and tensioner set-up is fine in the 07 and up bikes and will handle most any cam configuration that you desire to use for a street bike. I have yet to hear of tensioner failure with the new design. I have pulled a a couple of engines down that have 50k plus miles and the new style tensioners are showing minimal wear.

Gotta check crank runout before you install gear drive. The 96" motors are notorious for being a bit wobbly.
