Can you lug a bike with the rpms at 3000?
I was on a long ride the last three days. And a lot of the interstate was very long, straight and hilly no turns. Speed limit was 65 mph. I had my bike in 5th going 65mpn. The rpms were at 2800-3000 with the cruse control on. Going straight and down hill was no problem but when the bike would go up hill I could hear the engine struggling to stay at 2800-3000 rpms it would do it and the rpms would not drop below 2800, but I am wondering if this is bad for my engine. I also had my wife on the bike and luggage.

I doubt that it was lugging. At that rpm you are way up on the torque curve. In 6th at that speed its 80 mph. What you probably experianced is your cruise control hunting about. The 07's was the last year for the cable style cruise and it was not as acccurate as the 08 and up. Were you in the mountains at higher altitudes cause tath may have an effect?

It could be the gradient was enough to load the engine up. What altitude were you at? That may have affected things as well. I know EFI is supposed to compensate, but if you happen to be riding close to the engine's limit it is going to protest!
If you were showing 65mph on your speedo it is likely your actual speed was a little lower. If you have a gps you can use that to check. Frankly I would have travelled at around 70mph on the speedo, which may have been enough extra revs and is probably close to 65!

Low end torue can use a boost.

Personally, i'd have had it in 5th gear at that speed but I just like a bit more response. If you were on wide open empty interstate...6th is OK.
