Touring means getting rained on at least once. And touring at over 100 is also known as flying close to the ground.

 

No....in that respect, touring would be drinking the 6 pack before you got home, and having to go back for another one.

You gotta be kidding - Florida to Montana on a sporty - OUCH. I sold mine (first Harley) after a 40 mile ride on the highway. Can't beat the Ultra.

 

This summer I've taken day trips of 100,200 and 300miles, and didn't think that was touring, that's just a good days ride. So touring is when it's at least 1 night over for a very very short tour and like the 4 an 5 day tours best. It seems to take a day or two just to get your head into the long rides.
and your right on about the Wing tour folks, but those leave and comeback whenever tours are for the non working and retired.

 

i bought a glide for the comfort to go on week end runs, which i dont consider touring.... when i head to sturgis next year, that will be touring.... across country/ no less the 500 miles a day usually around 750 anything less and i feel i havent rode enough..

in 1995 i bought a goldwing... sold it 10 months later with 27,000 miles on it... definately did some touring....

anxious for next year to hit the highways out west...

 

Going somewhere you haven't been, that's touring. Usually means a days ride just to get out of familiar country.

 

I consider myself a tourer. I have been in all 48 states and across Canada. I've done as much as 1100 miles in one day. It's not the type of bike you ride but how you ride it. I rode 550 miles with Heather and Sean to the Southeast HDF Rally. We took our time and stopped when we needed to but kept a steady 70-80 mph speed. I was touring on a Roadglide. Sean was touring on a Wide Glide and Heather was touring on a Sportster. Touring is packing what clothes you need and just taking off. Heather did just as well on her Sporty as Sean and I did on our bikes. I ended up riding home by myself and spent 12 hours in the saddle traveling 656 miles. Great ride.

 

To me, touring is going somewhere to see something, usually a days ride or so, but more especially several consecutive days.. Anything less than a days ride is a day trip if you go there and back the same day. A day where you ride somewhere and spend the night then come back to me is an overnighter.
