I never understood the MV Agusta purchase in the first place. Shed the baggage and move on.

THAT's where they fouled up.....thinking the boom years would continue and paying a top dollar to bail previous owners out. Recession hits and it is bleeding cash. Glad they sold it before it took them down like an anchor.
Was Harley after some sort of technology or product line that MV Augusta owned? Maybe that is why they acquired the company. Sometimes it is cheaper to just buy a company than to develop the technology yourself.

This could have been one option. Buy the company, strip the R&D data and give it back to the original owner. What ever was on file during their ownership is fair game. A company could get million worth of data without the long development times.
Let's only hope that something along these lines occurred and that they just did not make a huge blunder and **** off millions of dollars.
I was under the impression that they purchased the company for it's dealer network to try to expand sales in Europe. This coincided with them launching the XR1200 as a euro model only. I don't think that they were getting out of it what they had thought they would.
There may have been some R&D information that they were after as well.
