My question is, is the drain on the bottpm of the fork the phillips head screw on the back side or the screw going up from the bottom?
It's the Phillips-head screw, and use a ratchet and bit rather than a screwdriver, as it will likely be very hard to get out the first time.
...and by "pump the forks" as the oil is added, are you suggesting to just push on the handlebars with the weight of the bike on the ground....
Yes, but since you have an RK without a damper in the forks you may not need to do the pumping routine. I would still add a little at a time, pumping a few strokes in between.
I just got quoted today 4 hours for my bike to change the fork oil from stock oil to S.E. oil.
4 hours.......
They are probably following the service manual for a complete fork disassembly. I think this might be advisable at 50k miles, if for no other reason than to inspect the bushings, but before that I see no reason to do it, and a simple one-hour oil change as per my write-up is a good idea.
I just did this for the second time (22k miles for the first, 44k recently), and the oil looked just as black and opaque as it did for the first change. I didn't have this with my old RK with air-shocks, but I changed the oil every 10k in that bike and the oil usually looked very clean.
All Harley dealers use the MOCO flat rate book to charge for every procedure. My experience is that the procedures that dealers use to fix most anything are excessive in most cases. They want to pull the forks off to change oil, for instance. If you can walk, chew gum and read a shop manual, do it yourself. A shop manual is usually about $50.00 or so from the dealer. You will pay for the price of the manual on your first oil change you do yourself.
Thanks Guys. I do as much as I can but I really don't even care to play with the forks. (Now that you mentioned it) I heard him say the word "disassembly".
I only have 15K on this bike. I typically lean to the side of over doing things but if you think it's a complete waste to disassemble at 15K let me know and I'll just have them "Change the fluid" .....I appreciate the feedback and the tip that they are disassembling.
I would say that after eight years, folks have probably moved on. You might try a private message, in the event that they might still be participating in this forum.
