Tour Pack Luggage Rack Washers....
#11
Well......
Funny you should mention this I just had this conversation with a friend the other day. He "snugs" all of his bolts up and doesnt own a Torque Wrench. I had to explain to him why it is important to torque bolts what is actually going on with the threads when you do.
I get the point that technically its not a critical fastener but I grew up working on cars, fabricating parts and building bikes so I've learned to develop respect for doing things the right way and solving problems.
On these washers it wasnt just about the fact I couldnt achieve the correct torque it became obvious that there was a big design flaw. Even if I "snugged them up" the rubber washer was so soft I would be concerned about it tearing or flexing enough allowing the billet washer to make contact with the lid.
I can just imagine one of those bolts coming loose and me not realizing it because I never open my tour pack while riding across country. Meanwhile my rack is flexing and twisting my TP Lid for 400 miles.
Thought I would help out a Sponsor and call them to let them know my thoughts about improving their product and I spent .16 cents on nylon washers and the problem was solved.
When I work on things I try to do things the "right way" whenever possible and actually enjoy solving problems like this.
