So far I have not forgotten to take my key with me. I usually keep my keys in my pocket. I have, however, moved the bike without the key only to have the alarm start screaming.
I've driven off without mine a couple of times. Once I was close enough that the wife brought it to me. The second time I had practiced the turn signal code bypass and it worked great. Now I hang my FOB on my brake lever when I get off the bike.
I was reading a post like this a few weeks ago so I went out and read through the owners manual and figured out how to set my own code and disarm the bike. It was relatively easy once I read the directions. The code the dealer set it to was five 1s.
Thanks for the reminder on this one. I went out to start mine one morning a few months ago and it didn't start. Went in the house to get the other fob which I never used. Still no start. Tried to use the code but realized I had reprogramed it from default. Went looking for the paper it was written down and and wife had "filed" it. I still need to find it to practice and memorize the code.
Long story short I take her vehicle to work for the day. Call HD dealer at work and he says try batteries first. After work I go to Radio Shack and get two batteries. I think it was like 5 or 10 bucks. Switched out the batteries and vrooommm. No more problems. The batteries were about two year old. One discharged from daily use I guess and the other from none. Guess what's on my yearly maintenance list now....
Change batteries every year. Pick a time to remember easy, like when you change the batteries in your smoke alarm. You do change the batteries in your smoke alarm, right? Set the code and put it on a piece of paper and put it in your wallet.
6 months to 3 years.
This is a guess but I'm thinking leaving the fob near the bike (07 and up) when in the garage may make the battery drain quicker. Even if I'm wrong why leave it near an unattended bike.
