Default Balanced Engine for the Touring bikes

Have an '05 Softail Deluxe and a '06 Ultra, both are sweet rides....one question. Why can't they put the smooth running balanced engine that's in the softail, or a version of it in the Ultra! Sure could use that smooth running engine especially at low speeds and at lights..

It is my understanding that while the sodtail engines are much smoother at idle due to the balance of the engine, thay pick up more in vibration as the engine revs higher. It is the opposite for the Touring models. There is vibration at idle, but it smooths out as speed is gained and revs are higher. Someone with more technical knowledge can probaly explain better than I.

How many R's you turning? My Softail is very smooth all the way up to 80 mph. I don't drive much faster than that. The bike develops a slight buz above 70 mph, but it is not as annoying as the idle/off-idle vibration of the touring models!

I've wondered this also.

They put the balanced engine in a frame with the solid mounts (Softtail).

They put the non-balanced engine in a frame with rubber mounts (Touring).

Why not mate the balanced engine with rubber mounts?

You would then have a Honda.

I personally don't care for the balanced engines. The balancers rob power, and they make strange noises.

Low speed shaking doesn't bother me, and the rubbermounted engines are much smoother at speed than the balanced rigid mounts are.

Regards,

Bill

I TOTALLY agree with Bill.

Keep the B motors in the Softails. Touring models are great just the way they are!

The counterbalance engine was a fix for the twincam, it was tested on the last evo models of softails. The 88 had so much vibration when solid mounted they had to do something to address it. I would not want all those extra rollers, chain and stuff in my glide. If a electra glide is too rough a ride for you, then you really should have bought a goldwing. Harleys are like women, A certain amount of wiggle makes for a better ride!
