Default fabricating your own turn/brake combo light

I saw in the DIY forum that you can wire the turn signals in the rear to be running lights by getting dual filament housings. I want a turn/brake combo, but am not interested in a turn/run/brake combo. Could I just put in dual filament housings and run the other filament wire to the brake light and wire myself a turn/brake combo and save some money by not having to buy the module? Or am I missing something here with this idea?
