Unhappy It just died

While running up the interstate in construction traffic at 20 to 25 mph and my oil temp at 230, my Ultra just died like someone turned the key off. After getting out of the way of the Kenworth on my ***, i checked battery connections and all were good as were the fuses. Now it will turn over but won't start. Can hear fuel pump running but not smelling gas in the intake. Could it be my PC III took a dump or do i look at a crank sensor, or somewhere else? Just had new fuel pump, regulator, and filter installed last month.

When you say it "died like someone turned the key off", do you mean you lost all electrical power? Because if it's turning over now but not starting, I would make sure it's getting gas before going any further.

I would start by checking the hose connections at the fuel pump and filter. one could have come loose.

Thanks guys, never thought to check pump connections as it was just installed. Will look first thing in the morning. Had an indy tell me the PCIII probably went south so i thought i'd get out in the A.M. and start playing.

One more thing, before You go thru the trouble of checking fuel pump connections, check to see if you have spark, if you do ,then go to the pump.

My old 2004 dyna did that and it was a bad battery but it would usually restart and go a few miles before dying again.(dealer said they have seen that a handful of times over the years apparently the guts of the battery short out and kill the electrical system momentarily)

I'm with the others in your case though, go back and recheck things that were just serviced/replaced...that's the most likely culprit.

You gotta have fuel/air and a spark to go,that is for sure.

+1 ON THAT. I filled up a tractor a few weeks back, before I got home it was skipping, and eventually died. Gas looked good, no impurities visible, or water, but it was no good.

Just an idea. Drain out all your gas, save it for the lawnmower or something. Put high grade gas from a different supplier.

Good luck.

If it was bad fuel, I don't think it would die so suddenly as if you shut it off. It should run real bad and die and such but would not be all or nothing. Also, I would guess that if the pump or filter connection went bad it should give you a running out of gas feeling, such as sputttering and slowing down first. However, I have never had a fuel injected Harley run out of gas (yet) so I may just be talkin out my ***.

If it did not crank after it died then it would have to be electrical. That would most likely mean a battery or a connection. Since it now cranks you need to check for spark first then go from there. If it has spark then you have to find out if it is getting fuel.

Had the same issue with my buddy's ultra, had spark, fuel, turning over, no blown fuses, but no start, turned out to be, the fuel line where it comes out of the tank, we disconnected it and found a bunch of grime and junk on the ball valve in there, we were on a road trip too, side of the road, cleaned it up and fired right off, worth the check hope this helps.
