Got my XM installed on the Ultra

RE: Got my XM installed on the Ultra
Be very careful about dicing and splicing directly to the fuse box. Depending on your unit, the cigarette lighter adapter also has a voltage regulator built in to downgrade 12V to 6V. I made this mistake when trying to install my Sirius unit. The cigarette lighter adapter also acted as a voltage regulator, and I ended up buying the lighter socket adapter from HD and stored the power plug under my seat. Not to mention a whole new receiver unit. Expensive lesson learned.

By the way has any one cut their cig adapter plug and just wired it in to the fuse box? I heard somewhere that it supposed to only get 6volts but when I checked with a volt meter the cig adapter was putting out 12+ Did the same think with the indoor power supply same thing 12+ volts any one know for sure? I'd much rather run it to the fuse box, I've got a sirius sportster

RE: Got my XM installed on the Ultra
im wiring my sirius usinging the cig plug. I cut the plug off and wired it into a hot lead behind the fairing. I looked at the plug when I cut it off and it just had a fuse I didnt see anywhere it could step down the voltage. I would think it would reduce the volts in the holder where the fm modulator is located. I havent used the unit yet since im haveing problems with my mounting to handle bars..

I found this out after reading the installation instructions. There is a warning about cutting off the cigarette adapter, and should not be done. I found this out after burning out my unit. Again, depending on what unit you're installing. Mine was the Xact unit.
Yours may allow you to cut and splice. I would reread all warnings and/or call the manufacturer before powering up your unit. Cutting off the adapter may void your warranty as well. Just my .02.

RE: Got my XM installed on the Ultra
Each radio is different. My Xm Roady is 6 volts. some others are 5 volts. I bougth a converter/power supply off of ebay and hardwired that behind my fairing. I also got a short wire antenna that is mounted inside the fairing and a tach cord to play it through my AUX port in the radio. I made all 3 into a little harness that I fed through the clutch cable hole in the fairing.
